Oh, yes...it's winter here in the Northwoods of Wisconsin! Sitting here, as I do, looking out the front windows of the Forest Lodge Library at the snow piled on the cedars in front of the Cable UCC Church and the flags waving gently in the Veteran's Triangle, I consider myself to be a very fortunate human being, indeed! Cable just IS a very special place...and the rustic Forest Lodge Library log cabin is certainly part of what makes it special.
I am happy to report that, due to the purchase of an EcoSmartFire insert, function has been restored to our beautiful stone fireplace. The funds to purchase the insert were granted by our historic benefactors, the Mary Livingston Griggs and Mary Griggs Burke Foundation. We had it burning every day through the holiday season. You'll usually find it burning on weekends...or on especially cold winter days.
I can hardly believe that I've WRAPPED UP Year #1 as the Library Director! It has been a challenging and exciting year...and I LOVE THIS JOB! I love working with and talking about books and movies and magazines. I love hooking people up with the information they need...or the kind of entertainment they want. I love working on developing programming that will be of interest and benefit to local residents and vistors. And I'm certainly open to hearing about what YOU'D like to hear about...or see...at the library!
Yes, I've been talking for awhile about starting up a story-time here. Since it didn't get accomplished in the fall, I'm thinking now to wait until it warms up just a little! Also planning to get some film and documentary viewings going in the next month or so. One of our late season purchases was a 32" television set to utilize as a screen. So, if you're a movie buff...STAY TUNED!
I'd like to include some photos...but, our technology is not cooperating this afternoon.....
Board Trustee Marilyn Jenkins and I attended the Turning the Page library advocacy workshop in Minneapolis earlier this month...thanks to the Gates Foundation! It was an exciting, educational conference, with top-flight presenters who engaged us in considering how we might be better advocates for this very important public resource...the library! One of the many things we learned was in a workshop called "Public Perceptions of Libraries." MOST people think that libraries are important and valuable parts of their community. They ALSO think that we are well-funded. Whoa! Think again! While the Forest Lodge Library is very grateful for the staunch support of the communities of Cable and Namakagon, and while we receive some support from the Bayfield County (mandated by law) we are far, far away from being over-funded! Hopefully, in the next several months, we'll be talking with you about ways that we can help you help us...to our mutual benefit.
Stay warm and dry! And come on in to the library for some great new reads!
WELCOME to the Forest Lodge Library's new website...brought to you thanks to funds granted by LSTA(Library Services Technology Act) through a grant written and administered by the NWLS (Northern Waters Library Service, the system we belong to.) Our website was certainly due for an update, so, being able to take advantage of these granted funds was a very happy happenstance. Would like to extend thanks, also, to NWLS personnel who spent many hours schooling all participating libraries in the craft of website construction...through the use of JOOMLA, open-source software. Special thanks to Mike Sauvola...who took so many of my calls and who calmed me down on many occasions.
It's definitely fall here in Cable...after our late-blooming summer came and went...in September. The fall leaves, which have usually peaked by now...are just getting a really good start...but, chill nights should effect the change promptly.
Happy Fall...getting on time to curl up under a blankie with a cup of something warm and steamy...and a GOOD BOOK! Check out "Staff Picks" and "New Arrivals" for suggestions!
